Quick Tips

▶️To reduce the speed of your time-lapse video, lower the FPS using EaseUS online speed changer or iMovie on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

If you want to record time flying by the movement of clouds, city lights, or bustling crowds, time-lapse shows the dynamic effect of these frames while playing at a normal speed. It is a filming and editing method that alters the capture of frame rates. But sometimes you may have a problem like this:

I love filming many things in time-lapse, especially cooking food.  But the time-lapse video becomes too fast for longer videos.  I read that the iPhone automatically adjusts the frame rate to make all videos between 20 and 40 seconds.  If I cook something that takes a long time, the video goes way too quick.  I'd rather have a longer video that I can see what's happening. Is there a way to manually adjust the frame rate on time-lapse videos?

Yes, to slow down the time-lapse video, you need to change the Frames Per Second to a lower number. And how to do that?

Slow Down a Time-Lapse Video on an iPhone/iPad

iMovie is a video editing app developed by Apple and is available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It allows users to create, edit, and share videos with ease. With iMovie, you can trim and rearrange clips, add music and sound effects, apply filters and transitions, include text overlays, and adjust video speed.

It includes a built-in feature to speed up a video on an iPhone or slow it down easily, but you should note that editing time-lapse videos can produce unnatural effects if set inappropriately. To speed up or slow down a clip in iMovie, follow the steps:

Step 1. Launch the iMovie app on your iPhone. Create a New Project: Tap the "+" icon to start a new project.

Step 2. Tap "Import" and select the time-lapse video you want to edit.

Step 3. Tap on the video clip in the timeline, then tap the speed icon (a speedometer) at the bottom. Drag the speed slider to the left to slow down the video.

Slow Down a Time-Lapse Video on Android

Video Speed Changer: SlowMo allows users to create fast and slow-motion effects, adjust video speed based on frames, and slow down a time-lapse video for climax. They can select the duration of the video to edit. However, complaints about the tedious selection of the area of video exist, and sometimes, it won't work at all.

To speed up a video on Android or slow down a time-lapse video:

Step 1. Open the app on your Android phone and import the video from your gallery.

Step 2. Click the speed button and change as needed.

Step 3. Preview the video and save it once you are satisfied.

Step 1. Open your camera and swipe from the right for the time-lapse feature.

Step 2. Specify the desired speed on the slider and record your videos.

Can You Slow Down a GoPro Time-Lapse Video?

time-lapse mode instructs the camera to capture and display only select moments quickly, effectively skipping the rest. While you could technically reduce the frame rate from 30fps to 24fps to slightly slow down the video, this won't significantly change the overall speed without making it look like a slideshow.

Unfortunately, there's no way to restore the original playback speed. Many video creators have experienced this issue, so it's a good reminder to double-check your camera settings before filming.

Wrapping up

This post introduces an online speed changer for both audio and video files, which you can use for free on videos up to 20 minutes long.

For mobile phones, iMovie and Video Speed Changer: SlowMo are good options. However, they only work for videos recorded on phones, it's impossible to slow down a GoPro time-lapse video to its original speed.
